SURF'S UP - Animation Shot Builds

Underwater Camera Housing (no sound)

Runtime 00:38 This build demonstrates the underwater camera housing used in this film, along with the various water elements that created the ocean surface. Production simulated a camera in a waterproof housing, which could dip in and out of the water however the artists wanted. In addition to this type of camera, another version was created that actually mounted directly onto the surfboard, bringing the audience right into the heart of the action. Natural camera angles were the tool that allowed SURF'S UP to feel like a documentary. To accurately reproduce the subtle and unpredictable movements of a hand-held camera, Imageworks devised a new live-action camera system- a setup they nicknamed the "HandeeCam" in homage to the popular Sony video camera. The camera operator would operate a physical camera while an LED-based capture system recorded its movements, which then directed the virtual camera for the actual shot.
